13 Best '80s Hairstyles How to Do the Most Iconic '80s Hairstyles

curly 80's hair

Round out your curls with a layered bob that gives your hair shape and bounce. Adding these layers to your hair is the perfect way to give thin hair a pop of volume. Set the volume in place over time with a hairspray such as TRESemmé Hair Spray Flexible Touch-Up Pen.

Gravity-Defying Texture

But, as with any hairstyle, before you take the plunge and commit to a cut in the salon, you’ll likely want to consider your hair type and texture to understand how the trend will work for you. And as someone with textured hair myself, I was keen to understand what the best bob hairstyles are for curly hair. Toves-Vincilione says the shag haircut, as seen on Selena, is all about volume and layers.

Headband hair

A blunt bob and a choppy fringe has to be one of my favourite bob hairstyles for curly hair. Whether you opt for a sharp micro-fringe or a sweeping French-inspired fringe, it's an easy way to switch up a classic style into something more head-turning. The hairstyle trends that are popular today, like curtain bangs, wolf cuts and mullets, are the same hairstyles that dominated trends in the ‘80s.

Half Up-Half Down Ponytail

Pop stars such as Cyndi Lauper and Paula Abdul embraced funky crimped hair as part of their eclectic style. Pull your hair back with a wide headband set close to your hairline or throw it up in a simple twist with an oversized claw clip. Hair clips and headbands are timeless accessories that evolve with the decades and, like all our favorite '80s trends, only get better with time.

Fresh Short Bob with Bangs Looks to Style Your Blunt Cut

"There are multiple ways to style and wear a shag," he shares. "Focus on volume and bed-head texture for the ultimate '80s throwback." To create a sexy shag like Selena’s, Toves-Vincilione recommends applying mousse to wet hair and air or blow drying it. Malhotra says long layers worn stick straight are making a comeback.

While this look may not be for the faint of heart, this half-shaved style originated with the '80s punk movement. Pair this look with some neon color, such as Lime Crime Unicorn Hair Semi-Permanent Hair Color Full Coverage ($16), and you're ready to be the lead singer. So maybe you're not ready to shave the sides of your head just yet.

Sadly, the harsh truth is that dyeing hair, especially with chemical hair dyes, can be harmful to the hair and scalp for several reasons. It's widely known that prolonged exposure to chemicals is one of the easiest ways to severely damage the hair. Bleaching and coloring strips away the natural moisture and oils from hair and can alter the structure of the hair shaft, leaving it dry and vulnerable to breakage, per MedicalNewsToday. Experimentation, theatrics, and attention-grabbing gimmicks have come back into style; just see the late-2000s hair pouf making an epic comeback. When it came to hair, bright and neon colors were the order of the day.

If you’re planning on giving it a go, be sure to add a spritz of hairspray to your strands to lock your style in place and secure the volume. If you’re game for experimenting with shorter strands, an ‘80s asymmetrical cut will fall right in line. Sporting a deep side part, an asymmetrical cut gives one side of your hair a longer length than the other.

In this 1980s hairdo, the locks start from the root flowing down. An all-one-length, knock-’em-dead head of thick curls needs TLC. To add gleamy, rinse-out highlights, go for a colored mousse such as Helene Curtis La Forme Mousse in Chardonnay Natural Color Foam Highlighter. To create a stylish windswept look with lots of billowy volume, a quick set with flexible Styling Stix rollers does the trick. Serena has a degree in journalism from the University of Oregon and works in public relations for a nonprofit. With her vast knowledge of the latest trends, haircuts, and colors, she helps people look their best. At an event in London on Tuesday, Billie Piper wore a mullet-style look, created by her hairstylist Halley Brisker.

Instead, in 2024, it translates to S-shaped waves that give you loads of volume, minus the frizz. A valentine to curly-haired teen queens back in the day, the permed bob is a sweet, angst-free approach to big curls that we can all definitely get in on this year. In fact, it’s quite similar to all the natural-textured bobs we’ve seen lately, save for slightly tighter, more defined ringlets. And it seems to have proven sweeter the second time around. Much more watered down—and less outrageous—versions of its fun hair trends are returning to the scene. Read on for all the ’80s hairstyle inspiration you will need.

Cropped hair is more versatile than one might imagine and was worn in the '80s by all types of different women from diverse backgrounds. Depending on how cropped hair is styled, it can give off entirely different vibes. Just compare the images of poised and preppy Princess Diana in the '80s with her feathered crop in contrast with Grace Jones' edgy yet minimal buzz cut. If you want to copy Jones' incredible look, be prepared to head to the salon every two weeks to avoid overgrown hair. With slightly longer cropped cuts, you can afford to space out your salon visits with a little more time between each session.

Eighties bobs ranged from straight and sleek (like Melanie Griffith in Something Wild) to soft and fluffy (like Molly Ringwald in The Breakfast Club). They were everywhere, and according to our experts, they’re about to be everywhere again. "Eighties blowouts are all about lifting the roots," says Toth. As with any re-emerging style, the key to making an '80s style werk is to make it modern. "Hair is always evolving — there’s a modern spin on every '80s trend that keeps it fresh and new," Miami-based hairstylist Aaron Grenia. With that, scroll on for some '80s-inspired looks you can totally rock in the 21st century.

10 Totally 80s Hairstyles Made Modern for 2023

curly 80's hair

To style Jodi’s new look, we began by wetting her hair (it can also be left dry) and combing it back off her face. Next, we applied a styling gel (here, Gelle by Aime d’Elle) and showed Jodi how to comb it evenly through her hair with her fingers. We decided to give Whitney’s very curly hair (“Before” pic, below) a sleeker shape and — for fun — a touch of color.

The Modern Mullet: Miley Cyrus

With big ‘80s hair on the brain, we’d be remiss not to talk about long, curly hair. Because volume and bounce was where it was at back then, people rocked their natural, curly texture proudly. (Some even faked it with perms, but more on that later!) Embrace your natural waves with the help of a curl mousse like the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle CURVE IT Elastic Curl Mousse. Scrunch an egg-sized amount through your strands and let them air dry. Once complete, add a touch of hairspray to keep your curls bouncy and intact all day long.

Curly Hair with Side Part

The classic mullet was a hairstyle staple for every '80s heartthrob — and it has, perhaps surprisingly, withstood the test of time. Nothing says high fashion like hair slicked back at the roots. Rihanna pulls of this '80s style effortlessly with mega-volume. To get this look at home, try using Ouai's Matte Pomade ($24) and running it through the roots of your hair. Neon scrunchies ruled aerobics classes during the '80s, but in 2020 they've been given the neutral treatment. Nude, grey, black, and white scrunchies elevate any hairstyle and are no longer restricted to workouts.

Mini Bob

The experimental vibe of the '80s was a declaration of independence, a rebellion against subtlety, and a testament to the philosophy that bigger was always better. This was an era where hair was elevated from merely a fashion statement to basically being an art form. The intense styling tools and chemical treatments popular at the time didn't exactly take hair health into account. A generation of hair that, while glorious in its flamboyance, sometimes bore the scars of a stylistic war waged daily in front of the mirror. To find out which '80s hairstyles are back on trend and how you can update them, we turned to the experts.

Swap the black bows for a few scrunchies or stretch hair ties—don't shy away from really making the look your own. Singer Cyndi Lauper in 1980 with a short bleached pixie cut with read highlights, which she pairs with matching lipstick and eyeshadow. Since going white-blond is an intense process for most people, seek the help of a professional hair colorist if possible. While you can do this yourself, a professional has the expertise to assess your hair type and condition and can recommend the best approach to achieve the desired color while minimizing damage.

Shaggy Bob

There are so many things to say about '80s hair, but the one word that encompasses it all is BIG. If you're trying to dress up with wild '80s hair for Halloween or just like to remember your good ol' days, never forget that bigger was better. A few trends continue to return, like clips and bows, but we'd like to leave a few of these in the past (crimping is best kept in the 1980s, don't ya think?). Unlike the classic bob, the medium bob has your hair touching your shoulders.

Just mist it through your hair in the morning to rehydrate and reactivate your texture. Keep your bob looking bouncy and light with a blast of texture spray at the roots. This one is infused with argan oil so it won't dry out your curls. Then blow it to create that massive hair effect that you want.

Plus, it’s the perfect hairstyle if you need to keep your hair out of your face. The 1980s spawned the creation of many different eccentric styles, like punk-pop fashion and gender-blurring haircuts. It was a decade obsessed with volume, bright colors, making a statement, and expressing all of these things with hair. And the epitome of eighties hairstyles was the cool girl with big curls and feathered bangs. To recreate a voluminous look like Jennifer's, apply a styling product throughout and blow-dry the hair. Then, create waves with rollers or a curling iron and lock everything into place with hairspray.

French Bob

This is a cut above the rest if hair is fine-textured, straight to wavy. Hair is snipped closest at nape and graduates to a fuller crown with long side wisps. Starting with dry hair, part on the side, and comb straight back. Begin at crown and randomly wind small (one- to two-inch) sections of hair on the rollers, turning toward back. Secure hair in place by simply bending the ends of the rollers inward — there’s no need to fuss with bobby pins.

Sophie Ross has covered beauty and fashion for more than five years. Her writing appears in Refinery29, The Knot, StyleCaster, and more. Fleetwood Mac lead singer Stevie Nicks may not have inspired The Eagles’ “Witchy Woman,” but she definitely embodies the vibe.

The fluffy hair texture gives the textured bob a unique appearance. But it is the distinctive dying of the two colors that stands out. You can also try out with other hair colors of your choice to bring back the 80s vibe. To get the look, just brush alt hair back, secure at the nape of your neck with a coated rubber band, and cover the band with a beautiful bow.

"Another easy, at-home nod to '80s styling is accessories," says Robinson. "There are tons out right now, from clips to headbands to claw clips." There was "straight out the side of your head" (lookin' at you, Deb from Napoleon Dynamite), valley-girl classic, and sky-high (like Queen Bey's look, here).

"Strong bobs are about to be all over the place," says Robinson. "This bold hair is graphic, blunt, and geometric. It shows up and doesn’t wisp away into nothing." She says this is an especially great cut for people with fine hair. A bob is a pretty timeless look, but it has its moments in the spotlight.

HOUSE MADE OF DAWN: N Scott Momaday: Amazon.com: Books

house made of dawn

Martinez was corrupt; one night, he stole money from Abel and beat him with his nightstick. However, he was too inebriated to fight, and Martinez beat him so badly that he had to go to the hospital. Ben visited Abel in the hospital and called Angela to ask her to visit Abel to lift his spirits, as he helped her many years before. One night, too drunk and helpless to answer Tosamah's taunts, he sets out to seek some kind of release, to kill the evil spirit, the culebra, that has brought about his misery. Instead of exorcising the evil, he undergoes a mortal combat (presumably at the hands of Martinze, the sadistic cop) that leaves him broken and near death.

Father Olguin

An elderly man, Francisco is mentioned in an old journal, written by Fray Nicholas. The protagonist of the story, Abel is a Native American war veteran who struggles to find his place in the world. Some critics have interpreted Abel's behavior as being caused by the strain of trying to balance the expectations of white culture with Indian culture. Others assert that the novel's flashbacks indicate that Abel was estranged and uncommunicative even before he left the reservation for the army.

Though Tosamah ridicules Anglo cultural arrogance and the stereotypes that feed it, Abel—alcoholic, at times violent, and inar-ticulate—seems to him to lend credence to the stereotypes; thus Tosamah, educated and articulate as he is, feels misrepresented, degraded by association. Seeing Abel through Indian eyes, Tosamah cannot help but admire him as a kind of modern-day warrior who refuses to give in meekly to the torment and tribulations of urban Indian life. But if Tosamah as an Indian is vicariously elevated by Abel's integrity, he is at the same time humbled by the lack of his own. Viewed from either perspective, then, white or Indian, Abel engenders in Tosamah self-contempt so strong that it is beyond enduring; he is anathema to the illusory conception of his own superiority that is Tosamah's primary means of emotional and psychological survival.

Return to Nature

In fiction, any abnormality like that has to have a symbolic level, especially when it has to do with something as important as sight. Father Olguin is introduced in the same scene as Angela St. John, and it is his connection to the protagonist, Abel, through her that solidifies his position in the story. She appears first, disrupting the natural serenity of the reservation with a car that is noticeable from a great distance. Since the publication of House Made of Dawn, Momaday's literary reputation has rested on his work as a poet and critic, and he has been praised for his ability to blend Kiowa sensibilities with Western literary methods. After World War II, the resources on Native American reservations became economic assets. Some politicians in the government argued that it was wasteful to allow Indians to keep such valuable property when they were not using it.

The Postwar Reservation

Abel continues to run despite his exhaustion, and as he takes in the beauty of the natural world, he sings the song of the house made of dawn. House Made of Dawn employs a nonlinear narrative to follow its protagonist, Abel, as he navigates coming of age as a Native American man in a changing society. The story opens with Abel running along an empty Southwestern landscape. It then shifts back in time to July 20, 1945, as Abel returns from World War II to Walatowa, his home in the Jemez Pueblo.

house made of dawn

Moreover, it is clear at the time of the murder that Abel regards the albino as a snake. He feels "the scales of the lips and the hot slippery point of the tongue, writhing." But that Abel is "acting entirely within the Indian tradition" when he kills the albino is wrong. His re-entry into the village spoiled, Abel turns not to the ceremonial structure of the pueblo for support but to Angela. And it is the Benevides house, not the land, which provides "the wings and the stage" for their affair. Abel's first sexual encounter with Angela is juxtaposed in the novel with Francisco's encounter with the albino witch in his cornfield. Indeed, Angela, who "keened" to the unnatural qualities of the albino during the corre de gaio, echoes the auditory symbols of evil mentioned earlier.

Though Mexican, his Catholic training has accustomed him to Western thought; as a result, he is as curious about Native American customs as I would be in his position. At the same time, I find that Father Olguin's story provides a parallel version of the book's main story. The best approach one can take to an unfamiliar text is to burrow into it at any point of access possible, like a termite forcing an attack upon a tree. I will admit that there is much I find perplexing and uninviting about N. At times it seems pointlessly convoluted, while at other parts it seems painfully simplistic. There were some points in my first reading where I wanted to put the book aside, to write it off as a case of weak writing masquerading as a work of substance.

The first is the world of his father’s, wedding him to the rhythm of the seasons, the harsh beauty of the land, and the ancient rites and traditions of his people. But the other world—modern, industrial America—pulls at Abel, demanding his loyalty, claiming his soul, and goading him into a destructive, compulsive cycle of depravity and disgust. But the other world—modern, industrial America—pulls at Abel, demanding his loyalty, trying to claim his soul, and goading him into a destructive, compulsive cycle of depravity and disgust. The third section of the novel is dated February 20, 1952, and is narrated by Ben Benally, a Navajo relocated to urban Los Angeles. Benally's rambling narration includes references to more of Abel's life in Los Angeles — his job at a box-stapling factory, his encounters with a sadistic policeman named Martinez, his participation in the peyote services, and socializing with Milly. Benally also recollects the recent encounter with Angela St. John, who visited Abel in the hospital when he was recovering from the brutal beating that left his hands broken.

Reverend John Big Bluff Tosamah, the pastor of the Holiness Pan-Indian Rescue Mission and the Priest of the Sun, preaches to Native Americans in the city. Tosamah is a Kiowa, and he recalls stories told him by his grandmother, who had been present for the last of the Kiowa tribe's sun dances in 1887. He passes these Indian stories along to those in his congregation, many of whom are from other native groups. At the feast of Santiago, Abel participates in a competition that is based on a folk story about Santiago, who founded the town by sacrificing a rooster. The townspeople believe that the discarded feathers and blood of the rooster produced plants and animals from the ground.

Abel returns to Walatowa in time to care for his dying grandfather and perform the appropriate burial rituals. Having seen to this duty, he begins a ceremonial run into the dawn. The novel has moved in a circle, returning to the event depicted in the prologue. Francisco is dying, and Abel forces himself to push through his alcoholism and the remaining pain from Martinez’s attack to care for his grandfather. As Francisco dies, he reflects on his life in Walatowa, speaking in a jumbled mix of Spanish, English, and Jemez about meaningful experiences throughout his life. In his last memory, Francisco recalls losing stamina in a race but continuing to run despite being out of breath.

The extent and cost of his self-deception, however, are most painfully revealed in his comments about the land. By manipulating a variety of verbal styles in "The Gospel According to John," Tosamah keeps his parishioners off balance, dazzling as much as enlightening them. Through an ever-shifting combination of biblical oratory, street talk, exposition, and the simple, direct narrative style of the storyteller, Tosamah tries to relate to his audience on several levels simultaneously, to establish at once his oneness with and superiority to them. He wants to be perceived as a follow Indian sharing a similar culture and values, as a ghetto brother sharing the hardship of the streets, and as a teacher in both the shamanistic and professorial senses. The sermon is full of insight, but it is a masterpiece of verbal gymnastics as well.

The bad news is that this prevents readers from learning much about either world; the good news is that this alienation mirrors what Abel is going through, and it therefore takes us closer to the soul of the story. Moreover, Angela is staying at Los Ojos, translated as "The Eyes." Father Olguin is aware of her from the time that she walks into his church. Readers could take his curiosity to mean that he is a man of the reservation—that his way of thinking is not like that of the outside world.

But he also feels the same need with regard to his heritage and his people. When Tosamah speaks so lovingly, so evocatively in his second sermon, "The Way to Rainy Mountain," of his journey to rediscover his Indian self, we cannot doubt his sincerity. This sermon is longer than his first, and it is free of the verbal gamesmanship that characterizes much of "The Gospel." Still, he needs to be a winner. He sees in his parishioners, and even more clearly in Abel, the fate of Indians in a white world, and he cannot accept such a density.

The albino or, significantly, the white man, has been seen earlier as a figure of evil when Francisco heard whisperings from the corn and was afraid; after he left, the albino emerged or rather seemed to materialize from the green leaves. Since corn is life itself to the Indian, to hear an evil spirit breathing in the corn is a dangerous thing. A snake, or culebra, is likewise a symbol of evil, and when the albino threatens to turn into a snake, Abel's course is clear. Significantly, after his years in prison his attitude is unchanged. "They must know," Ben says, "that he would kill the white man again, if he had the chance … for he would know what the white man was, and he would kill him if he could. A man kills such an enemy if he can."

This understanding sends him out to run in the canyon at dawn, as Francisco had done long before. By carrying on this tradition he accepts his past and perhaps himself. I can, however, experience it through the eyes of Father Olguin—the man who comes to the reservation just as I have come to Momaday's world through the book, and tries to understand.

Culture Clash

Angela, now the mother of a son, told Abel a story with a heroic theme, intimating that he reminded her of the hero. Ben puts Abel on a train back to the reservation and narrates what has happened to Abel in Los Angeles. First, he was ridiculed by Reverend Tosamah during a poker game with the Indian group.

Many whites met real Indians for the first time, and many Indians met their first whites. Examples of this harmony can be found with the characters in the novel. Francisco, an old farmer, is said to have "an ethnic, planter's love of harvest, and of rain." Abel chops wood in a way that indicates a special understanding of the inanimate object, a relationship that the white woman Angela wonders about.

John Big Bluff Tosamah

He spent the days lounging around the apartment in an angry, drunken haze. He became frustrated with his roommate’s behavior and threw him out. During this time, a police officer named Martinez was hassling Abel.

Angela is unhappy and hopes that an affair with Abel will distract her. House Made of Dawn describes several ceremonies and festivals detail to showcase various Southwestern Native American religions. These ceremonies grant a sense of community, ecstasy, and understanding to the participants. They often coincide with revelations or moments of growth for the characters; for instance, Francisco is accepted as a voice in his community when he performs well as a drummer, and Abel first encounters the albino man during a ceremonial fight at a festival.

A patient requires a chantway ritual when his life is in some way out of order or harmony. In order for that harmony to be restored he must be taken through a ritual re-emergence journey paralleling that of the People. It is important to note the role of the singer and his ritual song here, for without songs there can be no cure or restoration of order. Through the power of the chanter's words the patient's life is brought under ritual control, and he is cured.

In Western culture, readers look for the "moral" of a story, especially one that is told in the context of a religious lesson. In the case of the folklore, interpretation for an audience of outsiders is almost impossible, so it is hard to explain the culture that values them. On the contrary, the fact that Western myths can be made so accessible is one of the factors that has helped Western culture dominate the globe during the age of colonization. Some critics interpret Momaday's novel as a statement about the difficulty faced by Native Americans as they are forced to assimilate into the outside world. This struggle is reflected in the experiences of the protagonist, Abel, as he returns home after a stint in the army during World War II. Francisco recalls taking part in the Winter Race and has a page in his ledger with a drawing of himself running the race and the caption "1889." In the 1940s, when the novel begins, Francisco is a farmer working on the communal land owned by the reservation.

He was alone, and he wanted to make a song out of the colored canyon, the way the women of Torreón made songs upon their looms out of colored yarn, but he had not got the right words together. It would have been a creation song; he would have sung lowly of the first world, of fire and flood, and of the emergence of dawn from the hills. Through their knowledge of the Navajo cultural landscape the Twins proved who and what they were to the Sun. The Native American novel House Made of Dawn … presents the failure of Christianity. Further, its mythic vision of existence becomes an alternative not only to Christianity but to modern civilization based on secular, technological structures….

Point of View

Therefore, because of the guilt he feels, a guilt stemming from a profound sense of his own inadequacy, he projects upon Abel his own diminished sense of self. After a brief prologue describing a man named Abel, who is running in the Southwestern countryside, the story proper opens on July 20, 1945, when Abel, an orphan raised by his traditionalist grandfather, Francisco, returns to Walatowa after serving in World War II. Alienated and disorganized by war experiences (and also, it is suggested, by the early loss of mother and brother and from bouts of malaise), Abel is unable to make a meaningful reintegration into the life of the village. Ben helps Abel catch a train from Los Angeles back to New Mexico. The perspective switches to Ben, who gives an account of Abel’s life in California as he understands it.

Father Olguin's enlightenment finally comes in the simple realization that to the Indians, as to death, the question "Do you know what time it is?" is irrelevant. The lesson of his predecessor, the temptation of the flesh, the humbling experience of his crippling illness all lead him toward this moment, just as Abel is guided to it by Angela, the albino, Benally, Tosamah, and all the rest. Whatever old Francisco carried within him passes on to Abel at his death.

"He had lost his place. He had long ago been at the center, had known where he was, had lost his way, had wandered to the end of the earth, was even now reeling on the edge of the void … The sea reached and waned, licked after him and withdrew, falling off forever in the abyss." Where he has understanding based on knowledge, she has understanding based on love. "She was a lot like Ben. She believed in Honor, Industry, the Second Chance, the Brotherhood of Man, the American Dream and him—Abel; she believed in him." She also loved him; she gave him money, a place to stay, and ministered to his needs out of love. They are drawn together by their awful loneliness, but it is not enough. All her experience had been a getting away from the land where his had been a returning.

"He brings American readers to a new sense of maturity through the use of the traditions of America," Meredith maintained. When he arrives back at Walatowa drunk, it is clear that he has not assimilated the standards of the white culture; yet after a short time, it becomes obvious that he is not comfortable with Native American culture either. While his grandfather, Francisco, remembers trying to instill "the old ways" into Abel, Abel remembers his advice as, "You ought to do this and that." He makes "a poor showing, full of caution and gesture" when he tries at the rooster-grabbing competition during the festival. Later, he kills the competition champion when he sees turning into an animal—the sort of transformation common to Native American stories such as Benally's story about a Bear and a Snake. Exposition — The novel opens in the late 1940s, with Abel returning to his reservation in Walatowa, New Mexico, after serving in World War II. The reservation is a place where traditional Native American culture collides with the influences of modern American life.
